DVD Picks of the Week: April 6, 2010

I know I haven’t done this in almost a month, but I’m going to try my best to get back into a constant week by week update of recent DVD and Blu-ray releases. So here’s the first Tuesday and April and what it has to bring.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans [DVD][Blu-ray]

Sort of a remake but admittedly not, Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant is strikingly similar to Abel Ferrera’s film of the same name. While Ferrera’s Harvey Keitel-led film was a bit darker and more serious than Herzog’s Nic Cage-led film, both are pretty sobering and moody films that mix a dash of realistic pain with unbelievable bad cop circumstances. Herzog’s film is a bit more loony thanks to Cage’s great performance. These are the roles he really shines in.

Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films [DVD]

Because you really can’t have enough Hammer horror/suspense/thriller films. This new set got a “highly recommended” verdict on DVDTalk.

Now because I find this week to be particularly weak, I figured I’d just go back to the weeks I missed and pick a few must-have titles from each week.

March 9: Up in the Air, Precious, The Stoning of Soraya M.
March 16: Broken Embraces, Dillinger Is Dead (Criterion), Mystery Science Theater 3000: XVII.
March 23: The Men Who Stare at Goats, Bigger Than Life (Criterion), Red Cliff, Fantastic Mr. Fox.
March 30: An Education, The Killer, Smash Cut, Sherlock Holmes, The Baader Meinhof Complex.
