DVD Picks of the Week: March 2, 2010

It’s a new month. Here’s the first week of March and its DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Where the Wild Things Are [DVD][Blu-ray]

One of the many very good films of 2009 that got lost among the very great films was Spike Jonze’s film adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic book. I came away very impressed by the strong mood and visuals of Jonze’s film.  A lot has been said about the grim attitude the story takes. It’s true, the film is a bit of a downer in spots, but it’s a tremendous world to supplant yourself into.

2012 [DVD][Blu-ray]

Roland Emmerich destroyed the planet again in 2009. I didn’t catch this film in theaters. I almost wanted to because of the absurd concept and equally absurd visuals of seeing major cities be destroyed. Perhaps I’ll give the stupid 2012 thing a go sometime.

Ponyo [DVD][Blu-ray]

I don’t know anything about this film except for the fact that it got great reviews. So that just shows how weak this week is.

Clash of the Titans [DVD][Blu-ray]

One of the cooler releases of the week is the 1981 film Clash of the Titans seeing a Blu-ray release. The film is getting a remake in the coming months (shocking!) so I guess they thought it was finally time. The film is led by Shakespearean actor and filmmaker Laurence Olivier playing Zeus. So there. But could they have chosen worse artwork?

Elvis [DVD]

Kurt Russell was Elvis once, you know. And John Carpenter directed it. Yeah!

The Wraith [DVD]

Charlie Sheen is…The Wraith. Plot: Jake (Sheen) is killed by neighbourhood thugs, and returns as a mystical figure (The Wraith – Sheen!!!) to gain revenge. Yeah, you fucking want to see this.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee [DVD][Blu-ray]

Looked interesting and halfway decent. Was pimped to hell and back on Craig Ferguson. I might give it a try.

What else comes out this week: My Neighbor Totoro, Alice (2009 Miniseries), Castle in the Sky, The Neverending Story [Blu-ray], Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story, Bitch Slap, Cold Souls, Gentlemen Broncos, Poltergeist: The Legacy Season 2, The Beaches Of Agnes, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin [Blu-ray], Return To The 36th Chamber.

What to stay away from: Girls Gone Wild: Foreign Xchange Students [Blu-ray]. I’m making a stand here.

Uh, one of the worst weeks in a long time.
